She holds a PhD in Creative Writing and has published five books to date. She grew up in Sydney, then lived for years in a valley with cows and horses. I have just finished reading ‘A Woman’s Place’ by Australian author Lainie Jones. It held my interest all the way through - I found myself reading well into the night to find out what happened next. I found the characters believable and I cared about what happened to them. The method of taking the story back to earlier times and places works easily and comfortably. I had no trouble being in those different time zones. The tenuous links between them at times when the earlier women became briefly aware of Julia in her time were handled adroitly, lightly. Aboriginal woman/spirit, Mary, plays a small part in terms of pages but critical in terms of where the story goes. Her presence adds an intriguing and important dimension to the whole story. In fact, in a way she drives the plot. The main story is of Julia’s long period of complete isolation. Though frightening and bewildering for her at one level it is revealing at another as she moves into the lives of the of the earlier Barragunyah women. This makes for fascinating and rewarding reading. The ending was, for me, a little bit unexpected… though it was succinct and satisfying. Part of me wanted it to be longer – more detail… but I always want to know more and what happens next!! Overall “A Woman’s Place” was a very enjoyable read… the sort of book I could easily pick up and read a second or third time." Marie Matthews, reviewer
